Apache Server
Dear Sir,
Can I load two apache servers on my single linux server? This is required to serve / protect files/print between departments. If yes, then send us the detail instruction on how to proceed to achieve the same.
Awaiting your prompt reply.

Re: Apache Server
yes,
install them as usual (in different directories)
set different port numbers for each (ie: 10080 & 10081)
in a browser type:
www.mydomain.com:10080/
or
www.mydomain.com:10080/
to reach the servers respectively.
I still don't see why you'd use two servers as opposed to virtual servers though |

Probably a bit old, but I'll take a shot. If you need to run two different apache installations on the same box, the quickest way, IMO, is to have two separate conf files for the servers (/usr/local/apache/conf/httpd-server1.conf and /usr/local/apache/conf/httpd-server2.conf). In your startup script, you will need to tell apache where to find the conf file, which I think is -f, but that's off the top of my head. The drawback here is that if both servers need to share the machine name (both departments use http://foo), then at least one server will need to be on a non-standard port, giving you something like http://foo and http://foo:8080. That's fine. It works. It's just extra work for one department.
Now, if one machine will run both servers, but under different names (i.e., foo1 and foo2) you can use apache's vhosting capabilites. I've never had to do this, so I don't know how to. :) The conf file that comes with the distro is pretty well documented, so it shouldn't be too difficult to figure.
A third option is to use .htaccess. I'm going to assume that some form of authentication is going to be used. If not, one department could just as easily look at http://foo1 as changing from http://foo/dept1 to http://foo/dept2. Using .htaccess, you can restrict access to the directories on a per-user basis (which can present maintenance issues) and serve all content off one server. I don't know all the particulars of your situation, but this is what I would lean toward if I could.
Hope that helps (and I hope I made sense ;).

Re: Apache Server
Narayan
There are several different ways of partitioning up Web pages on a single machine, from setting access permissions to directories to running multiple Web servers on the same physical box.
For a simple introduction see "Apache The Definitive Guide" (available from amazon.com).
For a better understanding have a look around www.apache.org and a read through the apache documentation and the 'comp.infosystems.www.servers.unix' newsgroup.

How do I install apache on my system
I have downloaded the last stable release for the Win32 platform 'apache 1.3.19'
and am clueless as to how to install the webserver on my machine. The helpfiles look like their ment for unix based installs to me, no mention of how to install the damn thing. (no disrespect intended)
Anyways I been told there is an install file that will help me well on the way to start configuring and running the webserver.
Can anyone leak some light into my particular predicament.
Thx =) |

CGI-Directory
To be able to run a cddb-Server I have to allow the acces to "~cddb/cddb.cgi" (some programs don't have an option to change this path). the default cgi directory is "cgi-bin". I read in some documentation to add an Alias in the httpd.conf file like this:
Alias /~cddb/ "/usr/local/httpd/cgi-bin/"
but nothing changes after adding this and restart httpd. I still get the "403 Forbidden" error message.
Is this docu just crap or am I just too stupid?
Thanks in advance

Re: redirect or vitual hosting
I'm working on an article about Virtual Hosting, which will hopefully run next week. If you can wait until next week, I'll answer this in some detail. If not, then what exactly are you trying to do, and what is not working? I'm not clear if you are trying to do redirection or virtual hosting. They are not the same thing. I'm equally not clear about what you mean when you say your site is written in Java.

If you've READ three (3) apache books and still have no idea how to set up virtual hosting, you should isolate yourself from society and go buy a Windows NT. |

It is easiest to let apache do it for you. Edit /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf. (which might be elsewhere!) Add the line "NameVirtualHost ip.address.of.host"
then you create directives (sometimes in an included file) that include the website URL and its location on the server. That is all there is to it. Well, restart apache when you are done. :-) There are examples in the httpd.conf file to guide you. Hope this helps. |

Attn: Everyone
I've installed Apache in 10 minutes.
Everyone is asking how to do thing and how to get help. I'm not savy on
Apache - but I READ the documents that came with the application.
Folks, do yourself a favor - print the docs and READ them. Do it the
hard way and be happy on how easy it is to get Apache installed and
running in under 10 minutes; and I'm using a Win98SE box.
Get reading and stop being lazy.
(PS: This is not a slam on anyone, just a wakeup call to let you know the
information you are all seeking sans the error codes from hell, are already
in your hands.)

Apache htaccess and W2k
I am trying to setup htaccess in windows 2000 running under a different port than IIS. I had it running properly, but I can't seem to get password protection to work anymore. I changed the AuthUserFile info in httpd, and now all I get is an error message that Apache can't accept AuthUserFile not allowed here, and it won't restart until I delete the entry which I have right after the Virtualhost info for the websites.
If someone knows what I need to do to make this work, please feel to email me at skeeterskip@yahoo.com.
ps- the only way I have had htaccess to work under W2k is to add the AuthUserFile info in the httpd file instead of a separate file. If anyone knows how to do it another way, let me know |

Apache Config problems
Hi there,
Im having some big problems with my apache configeration and dont know what to do!
I cant restrict access to certain directories. This is made worse by the face that the web server is more than happy to give you a listing!
For example,
http://localhost <-- will return the index.html file ok
http://localhost/ <-- will return the index.html file ok
BUT
http://localhost// <--will give you a directory listing. Shouldnt it be producing a 404? From here you can enter directories into the url, download source code, you name it.
I've attatched a copy of my config for you to have a look at, any help at all would be great! Thanks.

httpd.conf
-----
#
# Based upon the NCSA server configuration files originally by Rob McCool.
#
# This is the main Apache server configuration file. It contains the
# configuration directives that give the server its instructions.
# See for detailed information about
# the directives.
#
# Do NOT simply read the instructions in here without understanding
# what they do. They're here only as hints or reminders. If you are unsure
# consult the online docs. You have been warned.
#
# After this file is processed, the server will look for and process
# c:/program files/presence/aptrixconnect/apache/conf/srm.conf and then c:/program files/presence/aptrixconnect/apache/conf/access.conf
# unless you have overridden these with ResourceConfig and/or
# AccessConfig directives here.
#
# The configuration directives are grouped into three basic sections:
# 1. Directives that control the operation of the Apache server process as a
# whole (the 'global environment').
# 2. Directives that define the parameters of the 'main' or 'default' server,
# which responds to requests that aren't handled by a virtual host.
# These directives also provide default values for the settings
# of all virtual hosts.
# 3. Settings for virtual hosts, which allow Web requests to be sent to
# different IP addresses or hostnames and have them handled by the
# same Apache server process.
#
# Configuration and logfile names: If the filenames you specify for many
# of the server's control files begin with "/" (or "drive:/" for Win32), the
# server will use that explicit path. If the filenames do *not* begin
# with "/", the value of ServerRoot is prepended -- so "logs/foo.log"
# with ServerRoot set to "/usr/local/apache" will be interpreted by the
# server as "/usr/local/apache/logs/foo.log".
#
# NOTE: Where filenames are specified, you must use forward slashes
# instead of backslashes (e.g., "c:/apache" instead of "c:\apache").
# If a drive letter is omitted, the drive on which Apache.exe is located
# will be used by default. It is recommended that you always supply
# an explicit drive letter in absolute paths, however, to avoid
# confusion.
#
### Section 1: Global Environment
#
# The directives in this section affect the overall operation of Apache,
# such as the number of concurrent requests it can handle or where it
# can find its configuration files.
#
#
# ServerType is either inetd, or standalone. Inetd mode is only supported on
# Unix platforms.
#
ServerType standalone
#
# ServerRoot: The top of the directory tree under which the server's
# configuration, error, and log files are kept.
#
# Do NOT add a slash at the end of the directory path.
#
ServerRoot "C:/Program Files/Presence/apache"
#
# PidFile: The file in which the server should record its process
# identification number when it starts.
#
PidFile logs/httpd.pid
#
# ScoreBoardFile: File used to store internal server process information.
# Not all architectures require this. But if yours does (you'll know because
# this file will be created when you run Apache) then you *must* ensure that
# no two invocations of Apache share the same scoreboard file.
#
ScoreBoardFile logs/apache_status
#
# Timeout: The number of seconds before receives and sends time out.
#
Timeout 300
#
# KeepAlive: Whether or not to allow persistent connections (more than
# one request per connection). Set to "Off" to deactivate.
#
KeepAlive On
#
# MaxKeepAliveRequests: The maximum number of requests to allow
# during a persistent connection. Set to 0 to allow an unlimited amount.
# We reccomend you leave this number high, for maximum performance.
#
MaxKeepAliveRequests 100
#
# KeepAliveTimeout: Number of seconds to wait for the next request from the
# same client on the same connection.
#
KeepAliveTimeout 15
#
# Apache on Win32 always creates one child process to handle requests. If it
# dies, another child process is created automatically. Within the child
# process multiple threads handle incoming requests. The next two
# directives control the behaviour of the threads and processes.
#
#
# MaxRequestsPerChild: the number of requests each child process is
# allowed to process before the child dies. The child will exit so
# as to avoid problems after prolonged use when Apache (and maybe the
# libraries it uses) leak memory or other resources. On most systems, this
# isn't really needed, but a few (such as Solaris) do have notable leaks
# in the libraries. For Win32, set this value to zero (unlimited)
# unless advised otherwise.
#
MaxRequestsPerChild 0
#
# Number of concurrent threads (i.e., requests) the server will allow.
# Set this value according to the responsiveness of the server (more
# requests active at once means they're all handled more slowly) and
# the amount of system resources you'll allow the server to consume.
#
ThreadsPerChild 50
#
# Listen: Allows you to bind Apache to specific IP addresses and/or
# ports, in addition to the default. See also the
# directive.
#
#Listen 3000
#Listen 12.34.56.78:80
#
# BindAddress: You can support virtual hosts with this option. This directive
# is used to tell the server which IP address to listen to. It can either
# contain "*", an IP address, or a fully qualified Internet domain name.
# See also the and Listen directives.
#
#BindAddress *

# Dynamic Shared Object (DSO) Support
#
# To be able to use the functionality of a module which was built as a DSO you
# have to place corresponding `LoadModule' lines at this location so the
# directives contained in it are actually available _before_ they are used.
# Please read the file README.DSO in the Apache 1.3 distribution for more
# details about the DSO mechanism and run `apache -l' for the list of already

### Section 2: 'Main' server configuration
#
# The directives in this section set up the values used by the 'main'
# server, which responds to any requests that aren't handled by a
# definition. These values also provide defaults for
# any containers you may define later in the file.
#
# All of these directives may appear inside containers,
# in which case these default settings will be overridden for the
# virtual host being defined.
#
#
# If your ServerType directive (set earlier in the 'Global Environment'
# section) is set to "inetd", the next few directives don't have any
# effect since their settings are defined by the inetd configuration.
# Skip ahead to the ServerAdmin directive.

#
# ServerName allows you to set a host name which is sent back to clients for
# your server if it's different than the one the program would get (i.e., use

# AddLanguage allows you to specify the language of a document. You can

# avoid the ambiguity with the common suffix for perl scripts.

# SSL Engine Options:
# Set various options for the SSL engine.
# o FakeBasicAuth:
# Translate the client X.509 into a Basic Authorisation. This means that
# the standard Auth/DBMAuth methods can be used for access control. The
# user name is the `one line' version of the client's X.509 certificate.
# Note that no password is obtained from the user. Every entry in the user
# file needs this password: `xxj31ZMTZzkVA'.
# o ExportCertData:
# This exports two additional environment variables: SSL_CLIENT_CERT and
# SSL_SERVER_CERT. These contain the PEM-encoded certificates of the
# server (always existing) and the client (only existing when client
# authentication is used). This can be used to import the certificates
# into CGI scripts.
# o StdEnvVars:
# This exports the standard SSL/TLS related `SSL_*' environment variables.
# Per default this exportation is switched off for performance reasons,
# because the extraction step is an expensive operation and is usually
# useless for serving static content. So one usually enables the
# exportation for CGI and SSI requests only.
# o CompatEnvVars:
# This exports obsolete environment variables for backward compatibility
# to Apache-SSL 1.x, mod_ssl 2.0.x, Sioux 1.0 and Stronghold 2.x. Use this
# to provide compatibility to existing CGI scripts.
# o StrictRequire:
# This denies access when "SSLRequireSSL" or "SSLRequire" applied even
# under a "Satisfy any" situation, i.e. when it applies access is denied
# and no other module can change it.
# o OptRenegotiate:
# This enables optimized SSL connection renegotiation handling when SSL
# directives are used in per-directory context.

# SSL Protocol Adjustments:
# The safe and default but still SSL/TLS standard compliant shutdown
# approach is that mod_ssl sends the close notify alert but doesn't wait for
# the close notify alert from client. When you need a different shutdown
# approach you can use one of the following variables:
# o ssl-unclean-shutdown:
# This forces an unclean shutdown when the connection is closed, i.e. no
# SSL close notify alert is send or allowed to received. This violates
# the SSL/TLS standard but is needed for some brain-dead browsers. Use
# this when you receive I/O errors because of the standard approach where
# mod_ssl sends the close notify alert.
# o ssl-accurate-shutdown:
# This forces an accurate shutdown when the connection is closed, i.e. a
# SSL close notify alert is send and mod_ssl waits for the close notify
# alert of the client. This is 100% SSL/TLS standard compliant, but in
# practice often causes hanging connections with brain-dead browsers. Use
# this only for browsers where you know that their SSL implementation
# works correctly.
# Notice: Most problems of broken clients are also related to the HTTP
# keep-alive facility, so you usually additionally want to disable
# keep-alive for those clients, too. Use variable "nokeepalive" for this.

Wimpie,
I see there are a lot of problems with people not knowing how to install Apache on some flavor of Linux. Believe it or not I have created step by step instructions on how to configure Apache running WEBmin with SSL on Trustic (Secure Linux). Do you think anyone would be interested if I Bundled it and sold it at my cost? |

Apache Starting Problem
Hi... All
I am a novice on Apache webserver technology. My problem goes like this.
I loaded Apache1.3.4 from a skukware 7.1.0 CD which came along with the scounix7 kit on a Sco unix 7 Machine. Installation was fine. I changed the httpd.conf suitable to my environment. When i start apache by giving the command ./httpd at #usr/local/apache/bin prompt
It says "dynamic linker:attempt to open /usr/local/lib/libgd.so.1 not found " killed
after i try to give ./apachectl start ,it is saying the same error specifying that httpd couldn't linked to libgd.so.1 file
I try to create a libgd.so.1 in my lib directory it says
It says "dynamic linker:attempt to open zero length file /usr/local/lib/libgd.so.1 "
killed
What it exactly means. Does it specify there is some thing wrong with httpd.conf file. Kindly help me out from this great riddle.
For this problem i searched a lot through net. But all i could know is that libgd stands for library for graphical devices.
what exactly it want to say.
I am very much thankful to the one who replies me quickly

Server Upgrade!
We are running Apache 1.3.9 before.
Below are steps I upgraded to 1.3.19:
1) Shut down the Apache 1.3.9 server;
2) Download and compile the 1.3.19 and get httpd;
3) I test the new Apache by #./httpd -v , it works and give me right version which is 1.3.19
4) I start the new Apache with same httpd.conf as before.
But our site is not up. Should I do something to swithch the new server to replace the previous server ( eg. port..)? ..
Thanks!

We have installed apache 1.3.19 on IBM AIX RS/6000 VER 4.3.
When we tried to start the apache server with the following command,
$ apachectl start
we are getting the following error.
0403-006 Execute permission denied for $APACHE_HOMEbin/httpd
I have taken the following steps and during the whole process I was logged
in as root having all the permissions.
1. I have downloaded the binary source from www.apache.org
2. Then I untarred the tar file.
3. Then I executed the script install-bindist.sh
It is running perfectly and giving that message

| created or preserved) configuration files: |

| |
| /usr/local/apache/bin/apachectl start
| |

5. I have tried to Install through other method i.e
./configure --prefix=/usr/local
what there it is displaying this message and going into a state of infinite

undefined symbol
Hi,
I installed the httpd-2_0_16 and tried to install tomcat with it on SuSE Linux 7.0 .
I configured with ./configure --prefix=/usr/local/apache2 --enable-so
When I try to start with ./httpd I get the error undefined symbol: ap_table_get from the included file mod_jk.conf-auto .
With the Webserver (Apache 1.3.12) from SuSE it was no proplem to start tomcat.
I have no idea to solve the problem.
Can any one help me trying to figure the problem ?
Thanks anyway,

Apache not responding
I have installed Apache on Red Hat Linux 6.1 .
The server seems to sleep when it receives a normal http call from internet.
( And there is no response )
But after I make a ping to the specified host address it seems to wake up and serve every request.
Can you help me?
Is there a time-out after which the server goes down?
Thank you

Multiple httpd Daemons
Hi
I've finally set up Apache with PHP and Mysql working together but I don't know how to create multiple daemons. There are three instances on this web server admin, test and live each on different ports. I need to create 2 more daemons.. one for httpd_test and the other for httpd_admin. Only the normal httpd daemon exists.
Do you have any ideas on how I can do this?

Apache Problems
Why is Apache so hard to configure even with the Comments and Suggestions already in the .conf file?
ok, i have Apache ver. 1.3.20, with (a working) perl 5+ on a win98 machine.
i can access my server as www.mydomain.com, and mydomain.com, without using Virtual Hosts. I cannot access any .cgi scripts. i get an error no permission from the web page, and "could not spawn child proccess" error from my .log files.
I've read and tried every suggestion here and elsewhere, but to no avail. Can some one please help with this. regular configurations just dont seem to work. Why? I dunno!
I also want to get Vitual Hosts working, but gave up. need help for it too. a working .conf file would be nice to see, this way i could see my errors and correct them.
Thanks in advance, Dave |

New to Apache -- encounter problems
I have installed the Apache1.3.20 in Windows 98. Although I can find it in the Start Menu, I don't really know if the web server is set up.
I know some command-line command, such as
NET START apache, and
NET STOP apache
However, I don't know where can I type this.
On the other hand, if I using a DOS prompt and run apache, only a line
Apache/1.3.20 (Win32) running...
is shown and nothing else.
I want to know how to test the server?
Also, when I start my computer, a DOS prompt windows is run to start the Apache server, but sometimes the prompt shows taht a message that "cannot launch appicatcan" I avoid this?
I want to know if there any user guide for using the Apache server? Since there are many options in the Start Menu, I want to know the functions and how to use them.
In my situation, I want to make the offline process for the testing purpose, do I need to make other specials setting? How to I set in ServerName, ServerAdmin, Port and etc.? Actually, I cannot connect to the http://127.0.0.1.
I find
[Mon Jul 16 02:08:05 2001] [crit] (2)No such file ordirectory: make_sock: failed to get a socket for port 80
in the error.log file, what is the meaning?
Thanks a lot.

Re: register Apache server in Windows NT service
First I am sorry for any error in language or syntaxe in my messag , because i don't know english very well .
To register Apache Server in Windows NT, first you get the apache file (.zip, .tar) from internet (to get the lastest version), then you decompress the file in any folder, then you go to :
Start\Program\[Apache groupe]\Apache As Service\Install Service .
finally you go to Control Panel and run Services ,you will find Apache click start, to start your apache server .
Good luck,
I am waiting for your response .

Unable to determine maximum shared memory segment size
I'm trying to install Apache 2.0.16 on HP-UX11 and getting the following error message when trying to run the 'configure' command.
"Unable to determine maximum shared memory segment size"
there is a FAQ that talks about this very same problem, but I think I have plenty of /tmp space available, so I don't think that I'm having the same problem.
I've tried to run shmget() in order to see if it will pass back a useful error message, but that hasn't worked either.
Any other suggestions? |

No such file or directory: script not found
Can't make perl (.pl) scripts run as cgi files using Apache as a localhost, despite being able to call up the Apache page when using http://localhost/ , despite having Apache installed in a directory without spaces, despite being able to call up the despite having the httpd.conf file with what I think are the right AddHandler instructions:
AddHandler cgi-script .cgi
AddHandler cgi-script .pl
despite having the ScriptAlias in httpd.conf set to what seems right:
ScriptAlias /cgi-bin/ "C:/Apache/cgi-bin/"
despite having the path to perl and the shebang set correctly, and despite having the mod_cgi.c and mod_include.c files in my modules folder.
"Hellow World" *does* work if I run http://localhost/test.pl, or if I save the perl file as test.cgi and run it as http://localhost/test.cgi. But if I have only the test.pl file in my cgi-bin folder, the dang thing won't run as
http://localhost/test.cgi. And no, the error message I get does not indicate the .pl file is being tagged as a .exe file!!
HELP! DESPERATE!! THANKS FOR ANY SUGGESTIONS!!! |

Re: Road Runner
I am planing on using a cgi redirect with the link to the ip address road runner provides.
there ip addressing sceame is dynamic and changes .
by creating a perl cgi which gets your ip address through the env variables and then rewrites and publishes a redirect page on your free site space each time you turn on your server pc .
the redirect link would be to your http servers ip address.
or you can tell them your ip address and then they wiould be able to access your server but like i said they use dynamic ip addressing and the ip address changes.

403 forbidden
Im getting this error whenever I try accessing web pages on my server. I went through my /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf file looking for the malformed tagged, but this tag was not in my httpd.conf file. Someone commented about setting permissions so that the web server can execute within the directories. all of my files and directories are set to rwxrwxrwx, I don't see why/nor how the web server wouldn't be able to execute, unless the web servers permissions are set in another place. can someone please elaborate |

Web server
I am a novice on the subject (Web server), I would like to know where can I find informations with respect to web servers. I have an avide interest on the subject but unfortunately, I do not know where to start.
Since it seems you are a guru on the subject, i would like to request for your help, to get started. It must be mentioned that my only interest relies on Apache web servers. Even though, understanding web servers is not directly link to Apache web server, I would be very greatful if you would direct me to the right literature on the subject.

RE: Forbidden page
I have installed Apache 1.3.14 win 32 on my computer running Windows 98. I have also installed ActivePerl 5,2,2,0 which I believe is running although nothing happens when I type Perl in the Dos-prompt window.
When I type http://localhost/ in Internet Explorer I get a screen saying that Apache Web Server installation was correct.
When I type in http://localhost/C:\Antill_Web_Site_Tables\simple_database\robin2.cgi to access one of my cgi files it returns a screen saying Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /C:/Antill_Web_Site_Tables/simple_database/robin2.cgi on this server.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Apache/1.3.14 Server at http://127.0.0.1 Port 80
Could anyone help me as to what the problem is? Thank you. Robin Antill.
My settings on Apache Web Server
ServerRoot "c:localserver/apache"
ServerName Http://127.0.0.1
DocumentRoot "c:/localserver/apache/htdocs"

Secure Apache for Windows?
Is there an SSL version of Apache, for Windows? If so, where would I find it?
If not, why not? I was looking for a version which is an .exe file, or a .zip file. The patches that I saw were for Unix systems.

Re: RE: Forbidden page
Did you set the file permissions so that your web server is allowed to execute the script? This is the most common cause of the 403 - Access Forbidden error. |

Re: RE: Forbidden page
First off I would like to note, I have run Apache in the past with active perl and DNSwiz and I had no problems. Here is what I did.
Installed Apache to c:\Apache
Installed Perl to c:\Perl
set up my html directory to be c:\home\mudlair\html
set up my cgi directory to be c:\home\mudlair\html\cgi-local
Then in my httpd.conf file, I changed my document root to c:\home\mudlair\html
and my cgi script alias to be /cgi-local/ c:\home\mudlair\html\cgi-local
in my browser I could type in http://www.localhost and it would bring up my index file in my mudlair\html directory.
NOW, for cgi scripts, just access it like
http://localhost/cgi-local/cgiscript.cgi
I see you are trying to use \ in a web address, which won't work.
Change it to;
http://localhost/Antill_Web_Site_Tables/simple_database/robin2.cgi
depending how you have your document root set up.
I hope this helped you out any. I know it's a little late on this.

Configuration
I am first time user of Apache. I've been using IIS 5.0 with windows 2000 server. Trying to use Apache and unable to configure it properly. In IIS, it's very easy to point to directory where my files are located at (c:\inetpub\wwwroot...); with Apache, I don't see that option anywhere. I tried going to http.conf file and try editing it but still can't get my website to run. Can someone help me with configuring website as well as FTP site? Ftp site is for personal use and should prompt for username and password. Thanks in advance.

access via servername/~userid
Hi
Had problems configurating the web server on linux- with user directories.
The mails above helped plenty.
It finally came down to this.
User directory needs executable permission for all.
ie for userdirectory, drwx-----x works just as well! (chmod 701 userdirectory)
The public_html directory requires the permissions R and X for the group - ie. in this case apache. thus public_html has drwxr-x--- works well as well.
(chmod -R 750 public_html)
After that it seems to work typing in http://servername/~userid/

Inaccurate IP noted in access_log
Whenever clients connected to apache 1.3.22, my access_log doesn't display the exact client's IP address, rather it display a different IP address which is consistent eg: called it A. No matter which clients connect to the apache, it displays the IP A except from my own PC, where apache manage to displays it correctly.
Any idea? Thanks in advance.

Re: Redirecting
launch a cgi program each time you turn your server on to get your current ip address and then up date your free space through ftp with a redirect page containing a hyper/link to your current ip address.
this is depending on weather or not your ip address in dynamic (which is most likly) or static which does not require an updated redirection just a redirection.
the cgi program gets your ip address
then draws from a template the redirect page changing the hyperlink to your current ip address.
then through ftp access from within the cgi program connects to your
free space provided through your isp and overwrites the current web redirect page.
a dsn redirect would be set to your free web page space address.
which would then redirect the client to your server located at your ip address.

Help With External Http access
Feb 19, 2002
Hi Group, (I apologize if this also apprears in the yahoo-apache-server group)
I'm Stuck and I don't know why ? Can someone PLEASE help.
I've been experimenting for at least 2 weeks, where I must be missing
something simple , or I am just feeling plain stupid, or have missed
something. I am (very) discouraged.
Here's my problem
** I'm running a simple Web Server from port 80 on my Mandrake
Linux 8.1 Apache 1.3.22. Kernal-2.4.8-34.1mdk Server, Everything seems
ok, but any external remote httpd access fails. Note my primary PC is called >rompala2<.
On rompala2 I have an internal network attached to eth1 (192.168.0.2) that accesses an internal Unix/Windows PC at (192.168.0.1 >rompala1<), rompala2 also
has DHCP External access to the world using eth0 (at 24.200.175.155 >wwwrompala<
From my Internal Network (ie 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.0.2) I can attach to my httpd port on rompala2 or rompala1 with no problem, I can also bounce back from a web page redirect at http://pages.infinit.net/rompala/ to wwwrompala (which is eth0 from rompala2), with no problem from rompala1 or rompala2. See #1 netstat --inet -a for details.
However, if I try to attach from some other browser other than
rompala2 or rompala1.... nothing ! ie A redirect from
http://www.anybrowser.com/siteviewer.html or friends PC just fails
to connect to wwwrompala See #2 netstat --inet -a
1) First I thought iptables is the problem. fine if I turn
off rules ie /sbin/bastille-netfilter stop , and I get a same result.
2) Then I thought my /etc/httpd/conf/http.conf and commonhttp.conf
must be in error. But configtest runs ok, and I have no /var/httpd/log
errors.
3) There must be something I'm missing. Note with xinetd started I can
telnet etc, and have opened the /etc/hosts.allow, same result no
httpd activety.
>>> Could someone please give me a hint on what else I can check.
<<< I'm stumped
Thanks
Steve Rompala

PROBLEM - Pls help
I am running Sparc/Solaris 2.6 with Apache 1.3.14. I have been able to successfully build and run Apache, however, I am having a problem with my perl scripts. I built this machine to serve up some perl scripts that pull data from a database and serve it up.
It doesn't execute the perl scripts, which are in the htdocs directory and loaded as myscript.pl, and instead displays them as text.
I am sure that it's a problem with the httpd.conf file, but I could be wrong. I have always built Apache on Red Hat and not on Solaris, so I find that I am manually having to set all the options now.
Does anyone know if I need to recompile Apache using the --with-perl switch in the configure or what?????? |

Re: Solaris
Arun,
The easiest & the fastest way to install apache on solaris is to download
anApache Binary for Solaris & adding it using pkagadd. alternatively U
can even build the apache using the Apache source both of which are
available at http://www.sunfreeware.com

Re: installing perl on Win32 apache server
You have to install Perl package, which is ActivePerl for win32 platforms, and then configure your Apache installation so that it handles *.pl or whatever files you specify, and allows CGI-Perl to run.
The ActivePerl installation is the easiest part, and when you come to the Apache configuration, read the manual that follows ActivePerl installation itself. I read it and succeded, if still problems, I can send you my configuration files, but better to read, they miught not work on your system, unless you have installef everything in the same manner. |

Re: installing perl on Win32 apache server
do you have the nuspher release? this one comes with php, mysql, webadmin, and perl already included and setup during installation. then after that just put your pl or cgi scripts in the nscgibin under the apache directory and change the permissions on the file ..... run it in the browser and there you go |

Re: Re: installing perl on Win32 apache server
you dont install perl "on" apache, if you have perl installed, make sure that you have apache configured to accept cgi scripts, and then make sure that all perl scripts are pointed to the right location on the server. It should work just fine then. It is harder than it sounds though. Keep looking throught the help sections.. you will get it |

Ip Address for my server
I am new in Web Server. I'd like to ask how we give the IP

Re: Ip Address for my server
if you have a dedicated connection, give your server that IP address. In win9x use ->start ->run ->winipcfg. This will tell you what your IP address is. If you have a Dial-Up account, do the same to find out, but everytime you log on, you will have to change the IP number in your conf file again.
You can also goto www.dynudns..com (i think) and get their software, or get OmniHTTPD. There not as good, but works well with dynamic ip's. |

Re: Re: Ip Address for my server
I used the ip for my nic, then posted the ip and www.xxxx.xxx where xxxx.xxx
is the local domain name to the "hosts" and "lmhosts" files. They act as a local dns on the win mechines.
If you aren't using a nic then using 127.0.0.1 or other non valid dns should work. Hope it helps.

Perl on Win32
It seems that I'm having the same problem as a couple people, but I don't see any responses here. I'm running Apache 1.3.14 on a Win32 machine and have Perl installed. For reference, Apache is in C:\Program Files\Apache Group\Apache and Perl is in C:\Perl. I have the line
ScriptAlias /cgi-bin/ "C:/Program Files/Apache Group/Apache/cgi-bin/"
in my httpd.conf, and have even tried adding:
ScriptAlias /perl/ "C:/perl/"
AddType application/x-httpd-perl .pl .cgi
Action application/x-httpd-perl "/perl/perl.exe"
I was trying to run the standard printenv.pl file in my cgi-bin. However, I'm also getting the Error 500 Internal Server Error. The first line of my code is #!C:\Perl\Perl.exe, so that shouldn't be a problem. When I checked the error log, every time I tried to load the page, it has something resembling the following log:
[Thu Nov 15 06:30:00 2000] [error] [client 127.0.0.1] couldn't spawn child process: c:/program files/apache group/apache/cgi-bin/printenv.pl
If there's anyone who can point out what I'm doing wrong, I would *greatly* appreciate it.
Thanks,
Michael |

Re: Perl on Win32
Hi Michael,
You're probably up and running by now, but just in case not, here's some other things to check:
Do double check the shebang line to see if your Perl.exe resides in C:\Perl\bin\ rather than C:\Perl. Also, is the shebang line following exactly the way it's shown on drive C, case sensitive? Do configure httpd.conf, so that you enable Unix-style behavior and leave the Windows registry behavior hashed out, so your shebang line can be recognized. (Look for it about half-way down in httpd.conf, near the comment "#However, Apache on Windows allows either the Unix behavior above, or can use the Registry to match files by extention...") Another help from Perl is C:\Perl\html\faq\Windows\Active-Perl-Winfaq6.html where it shows statements that make the .pl and .cgi files work, like this:
#!C:\Perl\bin\Perl.exe
use CGI qw(:standard) ;
print header ( );
print "[whatever you'd like to say]" ;
Best luck, hope this works for you.

UserDir Access
I have Apache installed on my local server, and access the server with an IP. I have created a user and userdirectory on my server:

I've changed the permissions on this directory using:
chown -R rumfelt.nogroup ~rumfelt/public_html
chmod 770 ~rumfelt/public_html
Then I restarted the apache server and tried to access the page with:
http://(My IP Number)/~rumflet/index.html
but I get the following error:

You don't have permission to access /~rumfelt/index.html on this server.

Re: Re: UserDir Access
You can write a shell script to loop through the specified directory and change the chmod settings one at a time. I'm a bit rusty on shell scripts but might be able to get a prewritten program. If i can i'll be in touch.

Re: Re: UserDir Access
Ok, try this:
chmod 777 userdirectory first and check if it works. If it does then reset the permission to the correct ones as suggested by other users.

Redhat Linuxconf (re: 403 / 500 Errors)
I have noticed a lot of people writing about 403 and 500 errors. After struggling with the 403 error, this is what I discovered about Redhat Linuxconf and Apache.
When you go into the Apache configuration, Linuxconf automatically checks all the override boxes. When it does this, it rewrites the httpd.conf file, altering your override configuration.
As I am experimenting with an intranet server, I have my AllowOverride set to None.
Note: If you have a configuration that is working, make a copy of it in your config directory. You can always restore it when you make changes in your conf file and get errors.

Re: help! can't access using server name
Your DNS is either not setup correctly, or the domain name that you have is not forwarding to the correct IP address, or not at all. Check with your domain hosting service, then check your network settings to ensure that you have a primary and secondary DNS server, and that they are correct.
If you can access other sites by name, then it is most likely due to your domain hosting not routing to your IP.
Also, if you're on the LAN side of the router and trying to access your own server on your own side of the LAN, it won't work because your IP is localized. You'll just have to use your local IP when testing it.

Re: help! can't access using server name
I think the problem might come from the fact that your ISP block port 80...It happened with my Road-Runner... I just changed it to port 8080. I'm not a specialist and I'm not sure what I'm talking about but you might just check it out.

Proxy redirection
I have just set up a Beta version of Novell portal services and I am running apache for the web server part. Everything seems to be running fine accept for accessing outside websites (HTML Gadget). Internal websites work fine. We use a proxy server for our internet name resolution. How do I tell apache to goto the proxy server when an out side website is called from the server. The browser on the server works just fine to the internet. Is just when I access the apache server and try to go to the internet is can't find the site, I believe the problem is is that the apache server does not know there is a proxy server. How do I let it know? |

Re: 403 Forbidden
If you are using Redhat 6.x you need to edit the httpd.conf file and then search for the marker file and delete it, Linuxconf does not configure it properly, that's why or replace it by doing this:

Re: Re: 403 Forbidden
After much ado I found this snipit in the www.apache.org FAQ:
Q:
Why do I get a "Forbidden/You don't have permission to access / on this server" message whenever I try to access my server?
A:
Search your conf/httpd.conf file for this exact string: . If you find it, that's your problem -- that particular container is
malformed. Delete it or replace it with and restart your server and things should work as expected.
This error appears to be caused by a problem with the version of linuxconf distributed with Redhat 6.x. It may reappear if you use linuxconf
again. |

Re: HELP! CGI-FILES DON'T WORK
I had the same error message on Windows 2000. To resolve the problem, replace first line of the perl script. "Although Win32 systems themselves don't use the shebang, the Apache webserver does. If you are using the Apache webserver on your Win32 system you should put the shebang line at the top of your CGI scripts." After I removed the UNIX format, it worked!
After reading a bunch of FAQs, I found the following link useful in debugging my problem.
http://aspn.activestate.com/ASPN/Perl/Products/ActivePerl5.6/faq/Windows/ActivePerl-Winfaq4.html
OLD:
#!/usr/bin/perl
NEW:

I have a beginner question that I couldn't find any documentation on. We have a pre-existing Apache 1.2 server that needs to be upgraded to the 1.3.19 release. So I installed the Apache server fresh and was able to bring it up, now I need to bring the existing data over to the new Apache server.
Can anyone direct me to some docs that will show me how to convert the exisiting data from one Apache version to the next?
Thanks. |
